One thing we remember was that our horse cart driver was expecting a child any day now. We hired a horse cart for one day and a bicycle for the next. The exotic east has a fascinating past with so many empires that spread throughout the land. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa is Sri Lanka’s second oldest kingdom dating back to 1070. It is a World Heritage Site and people still inhabit the land all around it. We hopped on a train to see this city in the boulders where people still live among the ruins. While the motor is applying resistance to the drive train and slowing the car, energy from the wheel is turning the motor and generating electricity, which is stored in the metal hydride (NiMH) battery for later use. While the stonework made for a royalty-pleasing aesthetic at the time, and created a popular tourist attraction in the centuries to come, preserving the intricate carving made the building’s relocation a challenge. Moving an entire building is a challenge, but dismantling a massive manor piece by piece and shipping it across an ocean takes the relocation process to a whole new level. When you draw out a piece of steel, you are increasing the length of the steel and reducing the thickness. One obscure piece of information that was documented on a roadside sign was fantastic.
